I have been working at Debenhams part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good discount with no limits - great around Christmas and for cosmetics! Best part of the job! SOME of the staff were lovely and I made some good friends. Paid holidays. Free uniform.

    Cons

You are literally nothing, non-existent, irrelevant if you don't open Debenhams accounts. I felt uncomfortable pushing people to open credit cards! You could be the best worker in the world but if you didn't open loads of accounts they really could not care less. No incentives. Had to work at 7am Boxing Day and got the Same pay as every other day. There's so many changing offers on that it's impossible to keep track of them and often the offers do not go through on the till and you have to do it manually which can be a problem if you aren't aware of the offer. Customers complained a lot about "misleading sale signs". Staff in my department were disgustingly two faced about younger part time workers as well as others. Supervisors and managers had clear favourites, you would get everything you wanted if you opened accounts (days off last minute, holidays left right and centre) whereas I was never given holidays I requested and had to keep pestering senior staff to give me time off even though I asked for it off months in advance. The rota system is a joke and will change last minute. You will be guilt tripped into staying later on a shift due to understaffing. There was no communication from senior staff to sales staff. The uniform is ugly and you would think you would be allowed to wear Debenhams clothing. If you want anything done you have to ask 100 times. Supervisors and managers were never on the floor and were always wasting time chatting to each other rather than working. Massive workload especially around Christmas. Customers will often ask you about other departments which you have no knowledge of meaning you have to run around to find someone from said department to help you. You were given far too many breaks, as an under 18 you get 2 hours break for an 8 hour shift which is ridiculous, in work 8 hours and get paid for 6! Would rather do a shorter shift! I was constantly being almost told off for being late to shifts that started 20 minutes after i finished school... 15 miles away! Treat account openers amazingly and everyone else like they are a liability. One woman opened the credit card account with an elderly man who had no idea what it was, I was disgusted by this but she was praised by management! Accounts are clearly favoured over morals. Basically, if you feel you can open Debenhams credit card accounts then you will love this job, if not then you will hate it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Less pressure on opening accounts.
Stricter rules for senior staff meaning they can't take more breaks than entitled to etc
Base opinion of staff on their customer service instead of ability to coax the public into opening accounts.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
