Former Employee - Sales Advisor in Craigavon, Northern Ireland (UK)

I worked at Debenhams part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I worked in the lingerie department which in itself was enjoyable as you got to have one-to-one service with people. It was always busy so shifts went quickly.

    Cons

ACCOUNTS ACCOUNTS ACCOUNTS. The pressure put on staff to sell accounts is ridiculous. It causes unnecessary competition between staff and management are putting on the pressure but making no effort to sell any themselves. I once requested a HOLIDAY to take time off for a relatives funeral and was very rudely told to "sort out my priorities" by a manager who is far too big for his boots and way out of his depth in a management roll. There was always an issue any time I requested holidays (which was not very often as I couldn't be bothered with the hassle). I would not advise anyone that I know to apply for a job at Debenhams as no matter how many hours I worked, how much overtime I did and how many accounts I opened there was never a thank you for any of it and they never returned any favours by helping me when I was stuck. In fact, they repayed my hard work by taxing my last pay cheque by 50% which I had to wait to the end of the tax year to receive back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would advise management to remember where they started off. To make an effort themselves to open accounts instead of standing around pretending to be busy. Or in most cases spending a lot more time in the staff canteen than they are supposed to. More training in how to treat their staff is definitely needed when it comes to rotas and holidays etc.
