I have been working at Delano Union School District

    Pros

The community is great. The students at the district are respectable, and the staff are very friendly. The benefits in addition to the competitive salaries can make this a desirable place to work at.

    Cons

The jobs, and the descriptions that pertain to them, are outdated, and are not up with the current market. So while individuals are performing skilled work, they are still tied to their generic title and generic list of duties. These features make it difficult when trying to advance internally, or find work elsewhere. The classified union has a history of selfishness, leading to decisions with greatly negative effects on its members.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The general mentality among the individuals that I've spoken with within the district is that management does not value the individuals they oversee. Management fails to reprimand individuals who do not do their job, but instead imposes more rules on everyone in hopes that it will solve the problem. This management style only promotes doing just enough to not get fired, as everyone is paid according to salary schedules, and there is no room for advancement. Another management tactic which I've witnessed more than once, is to give an individual imaginary authority through proxy. For example, employees closely tied with someone in management will essentially deliver directives with the end phrase being "per [management]". My message to management is that these methods which have been in practice much longer than I've been employed with you company, have pushed out a lot of talent, costing your company substantial amounts of money of consultant costs, new hire costs (including time lost while training), and in some cases needing to create an extra position to sustain functionality.
