I have been working at Dematic full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A decent environment for new hires out of college to gain exposure to automation, however it's not a great learning environment long-term. If you enjoy or need structure, or want to become an institutional employee that learns the corporate way and only does the one thing then Dematic is a good place to work.

    Cons

The company is heavily partitioned (or silo-ed) such that two people sitting next to each other in the same department don't know what it is the other does, nor does each person know what happens with the work product she/he receives or produces.

Dematic wants soldiers or robots. Don't question why, just do and die. Don't expect to make a significant impact or exercise your brain. Dematic may be a good company for "business" people (i.e. those supporting roles such as accounting, finance, management), but for those whose job it is to execute projects for customers it's not a good atmosphere; not creative, not exciting, not requiring much brain power. Example, Dematic has removed (pre-engineered) much of the engineering from its conveyor product lines. In practice engineers take pre-engineered "blocks" to create drawings, code etc. It's not all this way, but it speaks of the Dematic culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management, you're: not flexible, not understanding, don't seem capable of learning, not interested in listening to employees, not interested in streamlining or making processes or tasks more efficient. Perhaps the biggest problem is that you don't care, mainly about improving anything. Dematic management's position is "that's how it's done," "we've always done that," or "just do it (this way)."

You're employees, aka the soldiers, don't understand how Dematic makes money and those same employees are frustrated that you don't listen to them, and don't consider changing... anything, particularly when they are trying to propose more efficient and/or less expensive alternatives to current practices.

Bottom line: listen, actually listen to your employees AND communicate back what you'll do with the new information AND follow up with them by communicating why it can or can't be done, and if it can be done how it will be accomplished. The company, as large as it is and embedded in processes and standards, must become more flexible and adaptive when it comes to change of any kind. That is, unless your business model doesn't require thinkers to execute projects but merely soldiers to do as instructed.
