I worked at Department for Work And Pensions full-time (More than a year)
Good work life balance, with some degree of flexible working. Standard Civil Service package in terms of pension etc. however lower end of the spectrum in terms of salary and annual leave.
Highly gradist, hierarchical and closed-minded. With a tendency to infantalise junior staff, senior management operate a strictly top-down approach to management with little understanding of how things operate on the front line. Endless use of the words 'strategy' and 'change' to mask a lack of understanding of operational needs, with criticism met with performance management action (expressing negativity about DWP is listed as an indicator of poor performance in the HR behavioural standards). Particularly within HR, people are very much judged on words rather than actions with 'building relationships' (read spin and sycophancy) valued far above actually getting things done.
Advice to Management
Re-engage with staff at all levels, particularly in operations, and try to do so in a way that isn't openly patronising.
