I have been working at Department for Work And Pensions full-time
I particularly love my job because of the various challenges and opportunities to try something new. I have delivered group sessions and presentations, interviewed customers on a one to one basis and have helped a lot of people in to work. It is so rewarding to know that you have helped someone to secure a job.
As the role is customer facing it is not as flexible as some other jobs with regards to working hours during the week. We have to be available for our customers between the hours of 9 - 5 as a minimum so it is not possible for us to use flexi policies and come in early and leave earlier. The department is also not able to support their family friendly policies at present due to low staff numbers.
Advice to Management
DWP- in particular Jobcentre plus part of the department need to become a lot more adept at multi-skilling and sharing premises. A lot of our customer frustrations stem from the fact that they expect a one stop service when they come into a jobcentre and at present they don't receive this as they are signposted to several other departments, providers and support networks. It would also make the staffs job a lot easier and more enjoyable if they were able to resolve customer queries all the way through to completion or at least hand things over face to face where possible given that a lot of our offices are relatively empty due to staff levels decreasing.
