    Pros

EMC provides very good benefits, pay and a comfortable work environment. They keep their employees informed with the business challenges during off-site quarterly meetings. They have a large customer base that is in-bed with their proprietary technology.

    Cons

I was hired as a Principal Software Engineer for the Symmetric VMAX group. I worked my butt off bug fixing and adding features for their TimeFinder product and laid-off after 6 months without warning. I never spoke with my Manager during my 6 months there, we never held any group meetings, everyone was heads down debugging very poorly written C code. For ever bug fixed, two more would take it's place.

There is a reason the rest of the world is moving to C++, Java and other object oriented programming languages. There is a reason the rest of the world has moved away from CVS and onto Subversion/GIT. Engineers are still using antiquated tools like gdb instead of modern IDE like Eclipse. The Symmetrix VMAX code is loaded with anti-patterns, bugs and overly complex for what it does. EMC is falling behind their competition because Engineering is too busy fixing bugs instead of doing better Software Engineering.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Treat them better.
Create tiger teams and let Engineers do their work instead of putting band-aids on this antiquated product. You need better technical leadership to re-architect Symmetrix and VMAX. Companies like Simplivity will eat your lunch.
