    I worked at Earth Fare full-time

    Pros

    The customer service program at this company was the best I have ever seen. The open communication between the CEO and the store level employees was incomparable for a company of this size. At least annually the CEO would tour the stores and meet with all employees to both give company news and listen to our ideas. Employees were made to feel as more that part of the team, but part of the family. All of my good experiences were from my first position within the company. The first store that I worked for was one of the best experiences of all my employers. They regularly promoted from within and would foster growth in their employees. After being promoted to management, it was easy to see that they expect their managers to walk a fine line to balance between maintaining both employee morale, increasing sales and minimizing cost.

    Cons

    I can only speak for one location, but when bringing in upper management from outside stores, the company did little to oversee that these managers understood the philosophy and procedures of the company. Everything that I loved about the company was the butt of a joke to one of my store managers and there was no recourse. I was regularly harassed both sexually and due to my gender. I was singled out of management and made to work between 60-80 hours per week. When seeking help from my supervisor at the corporate level, they came to my store at my request and within the 2 days of them being there, only spent 2 hours actually assisting me. Contrary to the original store that I worked at, I was taught that management was to stand in front of my employees, arms folded as the Big Brother watching them like a dictator. While I did make my own mistakes, as someone completely new to management, I received little direction or training to improve and the direction I was given was in direct conflict with what I understood to be the vision or policy of the company.

    I relocated to a new city and store in order to be promoted within the company. Upon moving, I was expected to basically live at the store. I loved this company, so at first it was not a problem. However, for every hour over a 40 hour work week that I put in, my store manager took off. Besides spending time harassing me, this store manager asked me to "fire that d!ke" when an openly gay employee voiced her opinion for changing something in the produce department. The store manager was eventually fired, followed by termination of my employment two weeks later. Never in my life have I understood how a company could fire an employee for being the victim of harassment.

    All in all, I am not sure which of my experiences within this company is accurate. I can only guess that it is somewhere in between. I like to believe that nobody is perfect. Although my first experience was a dream come true and my second was a nightmare, I can say that at the end of the day I cannot recommend or warn against this company. The dream of Earth Fare is a beautiful thing, if only they could foster that within their store level management to make it an actuality in ALL stores.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I know many of the corporate level management personally. I know that they accurately represent the Earth Fare that I love. My advice is to make sure that everyone at the corporate level are fostering the mission of the company at all times. At least when I was working there, the mission was "to feed and inspire the healthy person inside us all." Pay attention to the employees who live this vision and foster their growth and dedication to the company.
