    I worked at Eastern Nazarene College full-time for more than 8 years


    Clear and compelling mission. Locational advantage -- Christian college in the Boston area.


    Since the 100% turnover in the leadership team in 2005-6, ENC has been managed and not led. "Safe" and "survival" seem to be the goals, rather than vision and thriving. The number of accomplished faculty who have left (significant publications, joint appointments at Harvard, Boston University, etc.) is alarming. Even more concerning are the number of faculty who are now hired without terminal degrees and who are alumni of ENC. The lack of a breadth of perspectives of faculty from many different schools of preparation is a weakness in higher education. ENC is stymied by a denominational system that has a school of about 600 traditional undergraduates overseen by a board of about 50 people -- mostly pastors who are alumni and lack a understanding of how quality universities are run. ENC will likely continue to survive (but barely) by denominational support, but has no potential to thrive in the current combination of leadership, board design, and inbred hiring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be bold. Set some goals that are "best practices" and innovative instead of micromanaging and survival. Calibrate to other institutions instead of only incremental change from the past. Return to excellence!
