I have been working at Education Management Corporation

    Pros

Pay seems to be slightly more at this company than others companies would pay for the same position

    12 paid holidays

3 weeks vacation available for use right away (most places start you with 2 weeks which you need to accrue)

Eligible for benefits after 30 days (they begin after 60 days)

Free tuition to any of their schools after 90 days with no commitment to the company after graduation

A lot of managers care about employee morale and their are a lot of personal development programs available

Upper management does attempt to communicate the state of the company through meetings with question and answer sessions

Work from home a few days a week for many positions

Clean bathrooms; every hour on the hour

    Cons

Poor company outlook; this is a good job for me because I only plan on being here for about two years, but I wouldn't bank on making it my career

    A lot of layoffs

    401k match was taken away

The workload can be pretty heavy at times. If someone quits or there are layoffs in other cities, it does not seem like people are hired to fill the previous position

You need to remain in a position for 1 year once you accept it (understandable to a degree if you are trying to change every 2 months, but it can be a little ridiculous)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It seems there is a large effort right now to retain employees. If this is the case, give people a chance to advance. I missed an opportunity for a better position that I most likely would have gotten had HR approved my app just shy of a year. It would have been a year by the time I changed roles and I probably would have considered staying with the company considerably longer had I gotten that position.
