    I worked at Encompass Home Health full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Paid time off - if you can take it. Usually work short staffed and can't take time off. My patients.

    Cons

    Company goes by the "point" system and are more concerned about "points/productivity" instead of patient care. Doesn't matter that you might have spent 2 hours in a home straightening out wrong medications. Will take all patients for that almighty dollar - even if proper training has not been accomplished before walking into the home. Most Rn's are salaried so that they don't have to pay overtime. I averaged 50-60 hours a week, traveled great distances between appointments and charted into the evenings. Management and/or scheduler could care less of how much travel time or miles accumulated between appointments. Scheduler played favorites and had a terrible attitude and demeaner and would change schedule after appointments were set with patients the night before. A lot of wear and tear on car. Pay very little reimbursement for gas mileage. No autonomy as an Rn as far as making decisions regarding admissions. Overall, a scary experience. Marketing would promise the moon, sun and stars to the poor doctors just to meet quota and would give patients the wrong idea of what services could actually be provided raising false hopes. My moral and ethical beliefs as a professional were challenged and I had enough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Upper management and business manager needs to get out into the field and take care of patients to remember what it was like. Have training work shops for unique patient conditions. Let marketing follow nurses in the field so that they get a clue. Quit focusing on points/money/acquisitions and focus on quality care. Start reimbursing gas mileage at the federal rate and increase salaries accordingly - pay overtime. Re-vamp the point system to make more manageable and more compatible with life at home.
