    I have been working at EnerNOC full-time

    Pros

    Tons of smart and talented people. The business model is sound and there is a great need for what EnerNOC is trying to do. EnerNOC is starting to learn how to develop products faster. EnerNOC has some disadvantages, but overall there may not be a better-positioned company to take the energy intelligence software market.

    Cons

    EnerNOC is struggling from trying to be everything to everyone... this could be a big mistake and causes quite a bit of pain without the focus and devotion to actually fix the problems. Many of the biggest problems EnerNOC faces, they have known for well over a year and haven't prioritized fixing them over developing new features and functionality that they think will drive sales. (hint: if they drive their existing customers to be successful, the sales will come and they could dominate the energy software market very quickly) Your promotion and growth potential are dependent on your direct manager... and if they aren't fans of a meritocracy or they like to pick favorites, your work quality may not matter. If you don't have a good manager your satisfaction and growth potential could not be very high. Many new sales people and new product offerings lead to a lot of customer expectations that can't be technically met by the product and cause a lot of pain for the people downstream who are tasked with keeping those customers happy.

    Advice to Management

    Focus on a few things you can do well and execute cleanly. Clean up data and drive a solution that fits in one vertical or fits one need. Not everything at once. Focus sales on what your product can actually do. Your success will be based on how well your product works with the customers you sell it to... not how many people you can convince to do a pilot. Stop focusing on new shiny things and make a product that drives success through high data quality, intuitive usability, and ensuring that the features actually meet customer needs (not just checking off that a feature is delivered on time). Please, please, please put a large focus on data quality and fixing some of the systemic issues we have with it. Listen to the people on the bottom floor more. They see many of the core problems and are learning what works and doesn't with customers. Having managers meet in a room to figure something out that we already know the answer to isn't working very well and is keeping us from learning and growing quickly. Focus less on image and more on what you actually accomplish. Promote the people willing to tackle the big problems, not the people who act like there aren't any problems. Optimism is great, but we may be taking it to the point where we are ignoring our problems in favor of a positive attitude.
