    Pros

There isn't much to the pros. If I had to name one it would be that there are some good technical projects to tackle, but that's about it.

    Cons

Like you, I read the reviews. And probably just as you did, I took them with a grain of salt. Well I'm telling you now: don't. The negative reviews are pretty accurate. Their mindset of security is to allow EVERYTHING through. They have great tech in place but none of it is set to block much of anything. Essentially they could be running IPS but everything is set to detection only or downright disabled, and there's not really a moment in sight for the near future where they'd get proper setup on FW/IPS. Additionally, the other departments play the blame game with security and attempt to blame every outage and network issue on them, even though it typically has very little to do with the SOC. You'll get stuck with a lot of additional work load because of this. The work life balance is also pretty bad. Being in downtown, parking is expensive and the train is the only economicAL option. Because of ths you need to add another 3-4 hours to your day that you won't have to yourself. There's no work from home options either, and use of VPN is very heavily discouraged. They also don't have much equipment to speak of. When I first started we had to share a 2 man desk with 5 people. 2 would get desktops, and the rest would be on their decade old Dell laptops with 13" screens and 4 gb ram, which are pretty much unusable from a power user or admin perspective. Additionally, the culture can be hostile if you're not used to the back stabbing ultra conservative corporate structure of the energy industry. Personal attacks are common place, and you get lip from management over trivial things that matter to no one but themselves. I'll put it this way: I resigned from my position and gave in my two weeks. They termed me for no discernable reason, when I only had a week left. Yeah, it's that kind of party.

    Advice to Management

Realize that it's 2015 and remote work opportunities are standard. Also realize that the environment you foster there won't retain talent for very long, considering your management for the SOC up and quit after only 1 and a half years there, although he was definitely a part of the problem. To be competitive in today's market there needs to be more than a paycheck and some benefits. Especially when you can get several offers that pay a lot more and come with fringe benefits within the DFW area on short notice. The security market is always in high demand. You also need to handle data breaches better. The attitude shouldn't be "shut up and pretend you didn't see anything or we're all fired" ESPECIALLY when it comes to obvious security incidents and information leaks sitting there clear as day for any auditor to find.
