I worked at Environment Agency full-time (More than 3 years)
Great company culture, flexible working. I had some excellent line managers and still keep in touch with a number of my ex-colleagues. Most staff genuinely care about the environment. I miss having an expenses credit card, it reduced the expenses claim hassle.
Not much scope to be truly creative. Need to be quite persistent when asking for training. The company lacks ability of swiftly getting rid of underperforming staff. Company car policy was too generous (for HO staff especially) but I hear that is now being much more strictly assessed. Most hated - the online system for filling in timesheets with codes, cumbersome, very superficial and always made up, so a waste of time really.
Advice to Management
Listen to the ops staff. Ideally, every HO staff would be required to have some ops experience to bridge the gulf between many airy fairy HO staff and the people working on the ground.
