I worked at Ethicon full-time (More than 5 years)

Formal career development planning. If you are in the right functional area, lots of opportunities for career advancement. Good salaries for professional staff. Decent, but not outstanding, benefits. Credo is a good set of guiding principles to running a business.

Ethicon is one of many operating companies in J&J and has a lot of clout. They tend to think everything they do is benchmark - not convinced it is. While a lot of effort has been put into deployment of the Energy for Performance in Life program which promotes sustainable, there is an expectation by a majority of management (but not all) of needing to clock long hours. There is a lot of bureaucracy which can impede making improvements. Some of this is related to being in a regulated industry, but a lot of it is self-imposed.

    Advice to Management

There is too much emphasis on reducing costs to ensure shareholders return rather than doing what's best for the business from a quality and technical perspective. Remember shareholders are the last in the credo and should be well compensated if all others Upper management and franchise headquarters seem to be immune to programs that could help at all levels of the organization, not just manufacturing sites, including Do It Right (apply Servant-Leadership). Take some of the advice that you're dishing out. Also, please ensure the rollouts of these programs are organized, so the people waste time and energy. Spend more time and effort in getting things "right" at the outset instead of rushing to get things implemented or to market. For manufacturing products, get more input from the manufacturing sites during development. Do a better job of vetting leaders - make sure to get employee feedback. Do not tolerate abusive behavior from management.
