    I have been working at Exel full-time (More than 5 years)


    Assuming you are mildly competent at your job, being relocatable means literally limitless potential for career advancement. Exel has hundreds of sites across the US and are generally willing to test your skills in an unfamiliar positions. Management also generally tends to respect effort before results which means that you can fail at a position and be moved around to try another one before being fired.


    Culture and values, work-life balance, pay and working conditions are 100% site specific. If you get a good site with a good GM, you'll love it. The opposite is also true. Because each site develops its own personality, there is a general detachment from corporate from both hourly and management. Often this means lacking consistency, respect, processes, knowledge and values. The nature of 3rd party logistics (ultra lean business) also means that the pay will be well below average. Recruiters often lie about hours, site atmosphere and development opportunities. Be wary if they tell you 45 hours a week, that the max capped rate for a promotion is 10% or a college recruit will be an operations manager in 3 years! Beyond the corporate hub in Columbus, there isn't much to be excited about in terms of social or charity events. Lean business and budget constraints mean that each site won't spend money on culture activities like cancer walks, feeding the homeless, working with underprivileged children or sponsoring local events / teams. Corporate doesn't support the sites through monetary allocations for events like these leaves it up to the sites to determine what they can and can't do - which means they usually do nothing.

    Advice to Management

    Exel has the potential to be great, not just ok. Lacking consistency across sectors and sites drag down the culture and values corporate has. Hourly associates and management want to be proud to work for Exel, not just to work for a specific site or manager. I have met and spoken with tens of managers and hundreds of hourlys, and I can tell you that nine times out of ten, no one is proud that they are working for Exel - they only tell their bosses they are! When a policy or corporate procedure states that Exel complies with all state and Federal regulations or that our processes are based on industry standards, we all know what that means: we are doing the bare minimum instead of striving to be an industry leader. We can do so much better than that.
