I have never felt as alienated at a job as I did here!

I worked at Expedia as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Free drinks, nice views of the city, beer and pizza Friday's.

    Cons

The cliques. Maybe it's because I was only a 1-year contract employee but even people in my own dept. looked at me like I was an alien. I had more conversations with my cats when I got home than I did with any of my co-workers! I felt the head of the dept gave me these weird looks and then felt like she went off and snickered with others in the dept how odd I was. I was first put in a cubicle slightly separated from the rest of my dept. and was totally shunned by them. People walked past me like I wasn't even there and maybe they thought I was beneath them. There were days at a time when not one person spoke to me. Then I got put in the area with my co-workers and the way to talk then was not turning around to talk to you but to IM you. My supervisor literally sat back to back with me and would write these long emails and IMs to me rather than turn around and talk to me. It got to the point of me being so scared to send him my work because it was either too generalized and I needed to take much more time on it or not generalized enough. I'd finish a project in 2 hours and then rather than send it to him (because I knew he'd tell me I didn't spend enough time on it) I'd spend 2 hours looking it over and moving things around ever so slightly because I was freaking out about how many things were going to be wrong with THIS one. Funny thing is, after I left they actually contacted me to do freelance for them, but once again was chastised for not doing a good enough job and started second guessing everything I did. At that point I told them I would not be able to finish the project because I didn't need the stress from them on how poor my work was when every other job I had praised me up and down for what a good job I did. Got a scolding from the lead and was told that I was brought on so the lead wouldn't have to work on this but now he has to check and redo everything I do and can't do his own work. Well, WHY did you ask me to help out when I obviously wasn't doing a good enough job for you previously as a contractor! Kind of makes sense for you to do it anyways if I can't do it the "right" way!

I have now been at a new job for a year that has been the TOTAL opposite of Expedia. I have felt so welcomed from day one and everyone is SUPER nice and I actually talk to people throughout the day while I work and people talk to me and there is never criticizing of work only. Everyone lends a hand with helping each other out because everyone has their own strengths. People actually come over to talk to you rather than write emails. The job can be pretty stressful during a certain season, but it's enjoyable because the atmosphere is fun and very relaxed. I would NEVER consider going back to work for Expedia in any capacity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make EVERYONE feel welcome and like they belong rather than making them feel alienated. Contractors are people too!
