I have been working at FEMA full-time (more than 8 years)

FEMA has one of the best missions in government, and it attracts many applicants who are looking for the excitement of working on disasters. Most of your colleagues care deeply about the mission and its success, and it is a "noble calling." There is great teamwork and camaraderie on disasters, although there is plenty of frustration as well.

FEMA's business systems are not strong, and decisions are delayed until the last minute or worse. Employees sometimes joke at FEMA "Unless its an emergency, we won't manage it."
