I worked at Farmers Insurance Group full-time (More than 8 years)

When AIG Insurance became part of Farmers Insurance, there was a pretty big change. With AIG, the work experience was horrific. After AIG's bankruptcy, they were eventually bought out by Farmers Insurance. After Farmers took over, it got better in many ways. The salaries went up (they had been poverty-level); the atmosphere became better (less toxic).

At AIG, there was pervasive surveillance. I don't mean just checking, but FBI-type surveillance that went on for years. There was such a toxic environment, I wouldn't even know how to begin to describe it - except like a third-world dictatorship. After Farmers bought the company, it did improve, but a lot of stuff went on in the background. I felt that Farmers generally had more integrity and decency. AIG for the first 5 years (until they went bankrupt) required overtime every week, weekend and holiday except Thanksgiving and Christmas. With the low salaries they had (I started at less than $19,000/year) everyone had to have a second job, but they forbade anyone from having an outside job that would interfere with overtime. When Farmers came, they gave good raises, not the 2% AIG gave. (2% of nothing isn't much)

    Advice to Management

Stop making the employees' jobs difficult by surveilling, evaluating productivity, and general aggravation. Let them do their work!
