Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Reading, England (UK)

I have been working at Foster Wheeler Energy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Disciplined approach to data management; meticulously organised and recoverable by all
Earnest and hard-working frontline employees (engineers and support staff) who take pride in their work
    (Some) international career opportunities
Open door and helpful sponsorship attitude to foreign-born staff
(Still) has word-of-mouth reputation for quality in the industry
(note: written before 2014 takeover finalised)

    Cons

Earlier reviews were shockingly accurate in their Cons for this company

Embarrassingly Machiavellian managers with no shame who will say anything to anyone to get out of a situation, be that a potential client or an employee with a question

Breathtakingly low amount of training provided in what is supposedly a technology-driven company; tendency to hire and fire skilled contractors with absolutely no regard to cultivating loyalty among staff; certain departments have attrition rate that would be shocking in any other company but here is hardly noticed

International opportunities go to closed cliques and old boys' networks; newcomers trying to break in will only do so by accepting eyewateringly bad conditions compared to the rest of industry

Spineless and supine attitude to a small minority of foreign clients from a certain part of the world, who tend to give repeat business, but probably only because the staggeringly unprofessional behaviour of those clients is willingly catered to

Increasingly desperate moves by company to win contracts by underestimating time required and 'underbidding' - and then cascading in private, to employees that if they want to get ahead, they have to work for free

Large number of foreign-born staff who are less likely to protest about uncompetitive policies, and unprofessional behaviours

Dominant sector of workforce seems to be 'lifers' who can do no wrong, even when making multi-million pound errors; instead criticism falls on anyone deemed as coming from outside this company's culture, who was not recruited from the womb

Obsessive-compulsive focus on quality by utterly sacrificing schedule. Absolutely no concept of 80/20 principle. Managers tend to focus on "painting the cabins of the ship perfectly while being oblivious to approaching iceberg". Projects come in technically correct but hopelessly late (late by 100% or even more).
