Lack of Professionalism Turns This Opportunity Into an Emotional Quagmire

I have been working at Fuhu

    Pros

Opportunity to work with kids projects - make no mistake: this company is about dominating the kids field.

Substantial lee-way with implementation details - engineers generally call the shots on what technologies to use and how to roll out features.

Huge opportunities to learn about business and technology.

Never be bored - you won't have time to be.

    Cons

Work is never consistent - each project involves huge surprises with absurdly tight deadlines.

Atmosphere of fear is pervasive and unnecessary - deadlines are routinely cut in half to make people jump.

Nepotism has created a paralyzing layer of tenured middle-management - and the middle management is rarely capable.

Daily time-clock e-mailed to entire company.

    No official vacations allowed.

Each year, the demos for Consumer Electronics Show are mismanaged and lead to a monster crunch.

Getting licenses for necessary products is almost impossible, leading to dubious "install disks".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructure your management team to add a second layer. Make real goals for them and measure their success. Provide real consequences to their failures.

Establish reasonable deadlines based on rational thought and not on "I want it."

Treat people with more respect. You're losing talent because you're jerks.
