Former Employee - Senior Research Engineer in Niskayuna, NY

I worked at GE Global Research full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

-The scientists/engineers here are extremely talented, interested in what they do, and overall enjoyable to work with.
-You get to work on a variety of different projects, sometimes in an area you've never worked on before. It is a great way to increase the depth of your previous area of study and really get some breadth in other areas as well.
-There is a real opportunity to work on projects that cross multiple fields of study. Biologists, engineers, chemists are all on the same team.
-With most (though not all) managers there is an actual interest in helping you grow in your career. Although the budgets have gotten tighter, there is usually opportunities for training and possibly conference attendance.
-Schedules are very flexible. There are people who work 6-3, 9-6, 8-5, and any other combination. I never had to worry about being able to go to a doctors appointment or even taking a vacation I was planning.

    Cons

-Before joining a group, get a read for the manager you would be working for. Some managers are fantastic, flexible, and will support you at every turn. Some are there to get the next promotion and will only care about the numbers. There's no way to give anonymous feedback to people above you, so the bad ones can stick around for awhile.
-For some groups, there is a poor connection to a GE business or they work with a GE business that is not able to see past today's profits (and understand why they should invest in the next great technology or manufacturing). In these groups great things are invented and they either go nowhere or are licensed out to other companies. When interviewing, ask for examples of how that group's work has made it into current products.
-Something changed in the culture as I worked here for over 8 years. The enthusiasm for the company and for the day to day job has decreased. I think somewhere in the budget cuts, benefit reductions, etc people started to feel less appreciated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-The people working here are the biggest asset you have. Start showing them that you appreciate them, find out why they are unhappy. For example, after announcing major cuts to travel and conferences, it might not be the best time to redecorate the executive conference rooms again.
-Put in some type of 360 survey that allows employees to anonymously rate their managers and TL's. You have groups that are succeeding despite the managers, not because of them. These groups could do even more with the right leadership.
