I worked at GE Oil & Gas as an intern (Less than a year)
Big company that designs and manufactures a whole range of subsea equipment, as well as drilling and surface equipment. Very good for learning and development. In-house training department that offers and organises plenty of training, as well as GE wide training courses that can be at any GE site, e.g. Florence. Lots of good people to work with. Nice, spacious office with onsite canteen. Each wing had its own breakout area as well as a kitchen area. Manufacturing facility 10 minute walk from office, so easy to actually see the equipment that is designed. Early finish on Fridays and good holiday entitlement (26 plus 8 public holidays, and can buy another 4 or sell up to 5).
The company is very dysfunctional. Many of the systems and processes either did not work properly or were not followed. There was no cooperation between the different business functions; in fact it sometimes felt like they worked against each other. This was possibly due to how the GE appraisal system works, with everyone having to chase their own goals and objectives rather than working together to achieve a profitable business. It was somewhat of a management farm, with the solution to the above problems apparently being to install more managers and increase the layers of management.
Advice to Management
I think the whole company needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
