I have been working at Gannett full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Salary (can be decent- in the $65K+ range as a base + commissions if handling larger accounts/less so for territories and other entry level sales positions), 401K (now debatable since Gannett no longer includes the broadcast/digital divisions due to the Q2 2015 split-up of the company/stock), market research (the do invest in it), nice office (downtown, etc etc), day-to-day independence out in the field, azcentral.com (huge traffic/pageviews), flexibility/willingness to price print and digital advertising aggressively to compete in market, decent (now former) publisher- intelligent/responsive, somewhat progressive attitude about client management.

    Cons

Untrustworthy/smarmy sales management (insincere/highly complicated group of managers) from the top down, 2015 management shake-up (several managers demoted/left company due to lack of skill set and ability to motivate and lead team as well as overall poor management skills/talent), lots of AE turnover, declining circulation (serious declines every measurement period), continuously rapidly declining ad revenue which makes for an extremely low morale/high pressure environment, reductions in sales assistant support (Q2 2015), moving in the wrong direction/lacking trust/knowledge/value of current salespeople (i.e.having to interview for your job/having to be rehired vs. your manager knowing your value), salesforce.com to monitor your activity with HEAVY marketing involvement - very intrusive at times, often controls/undermines sales reps control of accounts, digital pricing structure/no control over corporate selling digital to larger accounts which undermines AE's ability to sell to many large accounts (and yet still having aggressive/almost impossible sales goals, especially for digital, tough sales goals (which means you make less).

    Advice to Management

Business is declining/changing for the worse- inevitable- so don't hasten it by always hiring difficult to work with/complicated sales managers (poor leaders)- AE's who've left company didn't leave the company, they left their managers- hire managers who will work with AE's to support personal/professional growth who are sincere/nice people to work with; continue to aggressively price print, restrict corporate takeover of accounts- hasn't amounted to anything but decreases in business- larger market papers need to sell independently- corporate should worry about smaller markets, the bulk of Gannett markets), try to make everything so overly complicated to justify jobs, etc.
