    I worked at GateHouse Media full-time (less than an year)


    As should be in any outside sales role, you have a high degree of autonomy in how you go about your days. You're free to take lunch as long as you want, apparently run personal errands, negotiate an extremely complex, but wide range of options for your clients and get reimbursed for your travel and phone expenses. You're responsible for knowing exactly what you're bringing in terms of revenue, which provides transparent gratification. There are plenty of meetings that take place to play catch up, discuss team and individual goals, plan and execute accordingly. Office supplies are readily available, in addition to plenty of meeting rooms to conduct business internally or externally.


    There is no leadership, save from the occasional "downstairs visit" from the publisher himself. Managers are not fit for their roles here in the least. They seldom know what they're talking about, favor nepotism and grandfathering over results and depend on a cubical-cramped floor of whining, inefficient, socially-obsessive and unproductive sales reps and "team" coordinators to manage each other. If you're not the fifth sales representative to have been assigned to this extremely small territory lately, you must be the sixth. You can work until all hours of the night, on weekends, push yourself to your absolute extreme and none of it will mean anything. Eventually, if not quickly, you will arrive at the conclusion that, enough is enough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Do your job. Let others do their job and where they are, in effect, not and attempting to make others do their job for them, give them the option of either doing nothing but their job, or dislocation. Mind your own business and maybe help others mind their own business, in every applicable form as it pertains to your job and theirs, in addition to every social form as it pertains to your life and their lives. Get some education. The rest of us have, and yet, we're somehow "beneath" you and are expected to forget a return on such investment? Expect results; not everyone to hold hands and sing Kumbaya. Your meetings are too much, too frequent and waste colossal time. If you're going to require sales reps to show up at the office at certain times for these, give them a purpose instead of treating each one like it were a dinner party for Percocet addicts. Support your representative's efforts; not undermine their every move. I could go on and on, but at the end of the day, you're going to have to figure it out for yourself.
