I worked at Gerber Collision & Glass full-time (More than 10 years)
Typically no shortage of work because they have so many direct repair partnerships with insurance companies who are steering work to them.
The 100% commission plan for estimators is the dumbest idea ever conceived in the collision industry. Not only is it a conflict of interest with regards to the partnerships they have with insurance companies who steer work to them in lieu of discounts and cheap parts, but the estimator is the only position/person who is wholly accountable for completed and closed repairs, as well as KPI's and CSI. Everyone else in the shop, or within the organization from CSR to CEO gets paid every pay period regardless. The only person (s) who don't get paid are estimators, not unless vehicles are done! Demoralizing position with no clue if or when you'll get paid or how much.
Advice to Management
Try to keep in mind how the company earns revenue and focus on bolstering that aspect, not robbing those in the trenches producing the revenue to impress shareholders. It might look great on paper, but it's not a smart long term plan for employee or customer retention, especially with more and more heat from legislators and lobbyists who are trying to stop illegal insurance steering, which is the core of the Gerber business model. Without direct repair agreements/partnerships the company would go bankrupt quickly.
