I worked at Greater London Authority full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I joined thinking it was a great place to be making a difference to the city I love!

    Cons

In reality - your experience depends on what team you're in and who your line manager is. Some teams promote from within, other don't. Some teams allow for development, others don't. There is a lot of egos due to inflated salaries of middle management who are not worth what they get paid. I have personally witnessed bullying, and victimisation by managers in my time there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Speak to non-managerial staff, those doing the work that the managers take the credit for, ask your team why they are not promoting staff from within. Think about what the union say - most people with grievances go to them as they don't trust HR. Understand your teams from bottom up not top down. A caring boss that treats his / her whole team with respect will get the most out of people. Address the high turnover of staff.
