I worked at Harmonix Music Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Everyone who works here is either a musician or music lover, and the passion for music shines through in the games they make. I was lucky to work on some incredible titles, including Rock Band, The Beatles: Rock Band, Dance Central, and a bunch of fun R&D projects that pushed the boundaries of music and game design. The company's will and ambition to innovate in an industry habitually afraid of taking risks makes Harmonix special. The best part of Harmonix is the people working there, who are some of the nicest and coolest in the industry. My managers always supported what I wanted to do and I was lucky to occupy a few different roles at the company, which was a great learning experience. HR is amazing, and the (now former) CEO Alex Rigopulos was sharp, transparent, and deserving of the highest respect.

    Cons

Like any company trying to innovate in the creative space, Harmonix has faced some challenges finding the right leadership for new projects- some of which were very different than the games they previously made. Reticence to either hire outside leadership or promote younger rising stars definitely hurt the company's creative output for a stretch of time. While the benefits were amazing, the salaries were generally lower than industry average, which makes it hard to recruit top talent to the east coast. Because Harmonix offered a relatively "secure" job (compared to the rest of the industry), it was common for employees to stay for several years, often 10+. This resulted in "old guard" employees coasting along, sometimes pretty checked out.

    Advice to Management

Cut the cruft: promote employees who deserve it, fire those not contributing enough value, regardless of how long they've been there. Pay as much attention to Product Management as you do to innovation; cool things have greater impact when people want them. Find the fun, fail fast, etc.
