I have been working at Headspring full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The review title is an exact quote from Headspring's president, and he means it more genuinely than I ever imagined. Headspring is an employee-driven company with exceptional employees. Company leadership has faith in their staff to operate in the best interest of the business, providing autonomy beyond compare. Praise and recognition are distributed liberally by both leadership and peers, which encourages everyone to be at their best daily. The company believes in its principals and demonstrates their commitment by hiring and promoting employees and marketing and selecting clients based on them. Work/life balance is highly respected, and I have personally witnessed client relationships ended by their requests and behaviors violating Headspring's core values. The perks can't be discounted, either. The Engineering Department has access to cutting edge technology and developers are encouraged to establish themselves as thought leaders within the Austin development community. The benefits package is generous, especially for a small company, and is a huge improvement from my previous (large) company. Throw in the free snacks and drinks, catered Friday lunch, and cool company-branded t-shirts, and you've got a company that provides -- and expects -- the best. Headspring has set the expectation that providing for its employees in the best possible way produces the best possible outcomes, and employees prove the theory right each day.

    Cons

As a consulting firm you are progressing the missions of companies in different markets and may handle half a dozen different projects in a year. While there is a great sense of pride in the work, there is no ownership of the completed product, which can be difficult for some. Additionally, the client relationship is key and strong soft skills -- no matter the role -- are necessary to ensure project success. Frequently it's not what you say but how you say it that determines the client's happiness, meaning patience and consistency are key. Finally, it is a small company shifting frequently. Career paths are volatile, decisions can and will be reversed, and project staffing is a moving target. Those who thrive with consistency and stability will be unsettled by the nature of the business.

    Advice to Management

Continue building on the company's strong foundation. Culture is key, and exceptional expectations produce exceptional work from exceptional employees.
