I worked at Health Care For The Homeless full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

HCH was a wonderful place to work--its mission is beautiful & noble, if Sisyphean, and most of its employees are there in pursuit of that mission (not as common in the non-profit sector as one might think). I found my co-workers to be inclusive & accepting.

There are real challenges to be met, and solving them makes a real difference in the lives of people who are otherwise cast out, ignored, and even reviled.

    Cons

The flip side of serving a population whose circumstances are often tragic is that you are frequently confronted with human tragedy. It is not easy to face so much pain so frequently -- in our everyday lives, we go to great lengths to avoid it. That is all to say: if you can't, or won't, maintain empathy and compassion for people living with homelessness, you should not work here.

On an organizational level, there was some level of class-division within HCH; i.e., among front-line employees, care providers, and executive management. Whether those difficulties have been addressed in the intervening years, I do not know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the degree that class division remains, it should be addressed.
