I have been working at HealthEast Care System full-time (more than 10 years)

The care offered to our patients is first rate, and I take great pride in that. We have passionate, skilled providers and clinicians. The acute care hospitals are lovely as are the newer clinics - "healing environment" is taken seriously.

Recent changes have made this a difficult place to work. The talent drain is immense. I don't know what the actual turnover rate is, but in August and September I went to going away parties several times a week. I had to stop going because it was so depressing. People who have always been recognized as start performers are leaving or simply giving up and waiting to be let go. Leadership wants to implement lean flow tactics, but does not have a good grasp on what that means. Our lean sensei seems to be using us a case study for a book or manuscript. Senior leadership is incredibly disconnected from lower level management and front-line staff. Thousands of people are telling them that we are not being successful with change management and leadership response is that we are just wrong and should get used to it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I adore HealthEast, our vision and our history. We have the size and location to positively influence lives in large and small ways. We can't keep going in this direction. Listen to what we are telling you in the annual employee survey. Interact with those around you, patients visitors and employees. I walked by Kathryn Correia, CEO, as she was walking into Bethesda one day. She had her head down and would not make eye contact with anyone around. Shoulders were hunched and her body language was screaming, "don't touch, don't talk." We all have bad days, but this is typical behavior for her. Why not use this opportunity to greet patients? Walk next to a nurse going the same way and find out what is going on in her unit? Or just make eye contact and say hello to people that you know?
