Current Employee - Account Manager in Plymouth Meeting, PA

I have been working at Henkels & McCoy full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Large organization with long standing customers. Good at the traditional areas such as electrical, pipeline, etc. Very good benefits. Seem to appreciate a good work-life balance. Safety focused.

    Cons

Pay is below market. Management is detached. Very 1960's management style. Rules by fear and intimidation which shows in the employees having no enpowerment and being fearful they will be fired if they do the wrong thing and cringing because they are afraid of management "exploding" at them. Lack of management field experience shows in policies that are very unfriendly to field employees and source of great frustration. Company is solely focused on the dollars and the budget for this quarter dominates the direction of the company. Therefore, the company doesn't invest with reasonsible expectations for time to positive return. My advice to an employee is to stick solely to mainline, established business units in established jobs. Don't try anything new because if it doesn't pay off quickly (in often unreasonably short timeframe) you are just anotehr expense item to be eliminated. They talk about being a family oriented environment but the only family they are truely interested in is the primary stockholders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get into the new century with employee relations. There's a difference between being a old line establish company with tradition vs. being a company that is stale with employment practices that were out of date 40 years ago. Lastly, make sure you hear what the employees are really thinking rather than them saying what they think you want to hear.
