A good company, but needs some modernization in its management.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

HP gives consultants the chance to work with the latest technologies and work with customers both in the government and commercial arenas to implement them. Training is plentiful and HP tries very much to take care of its own.

    Cons

HP seems to have too many managers present for the projects that are being run. At times I've seen almost a 1:1 ratio of managers to consultants on a 10-12 person team, with a norm being 3 or 4 to 1. As a result, it brings the impression of great bureaucracy when none is needed. It also makes it seems like more senior personnel are being put in just to drain client funds at higher billing rates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline staffing so that consultants are not reporting to a multitude of managers. Force old employees from Digital and Compaq who were brought in to the company to adopt new management techniques instead of sticking with the "old ways," something that will not help the company flourish in the future.
