    Pros

HP's potential has always been terrific, and the current turnaround, while some peculiarly stupid steps have been made as part of it, should work well to bring HP into a new era of profitability. My experience is with the Enterprise side of the about-to-split firm. There is some great technology on offer, and the move to the cloud is not the best but also not the worst large company action in that direction. There is a dramatically broad array of product offerings, which means that with good management survival can be quite optimal. The software business, as a microcosm, has an uneven range of products, including some older clunkers and very exciting new SaaS-based options. There are lots of places to work in the organization.

    Cons

Senior leadership is fairly competent, and Meg looks like she'll lead the company out of the pit. But there are some less than enlightened thoughts around 'back to the office' and consolidation of IT in particular around a small number of sites which unnecessarily limit the range of talent. There is also a significant effort to off-shore IT which should be kept in mind for IT people. Middle management quality is quite varied, and often mediocre and weak. Given the company's recent difficulties there is a lot of tribalism rather than meritocracy (assuming that has ever existed in any firm whatever).

    Advice to Management

Weed out the middle management operators and pull up some of the individual contributors who have been staying out of the hierarchy out of disgust. Stop talking about layoffs for a while, e.g., and extra 5K heads along with the split announcement is only useful in maintaining fear---so stop maintaining fear in the employee population. Think about leveraging long-standing talent rather than vacuuming up newbies and new grads who are cheaper but relatively clueless.
