  • Lack of leadership leads to apathy, medocrity, and stagnation. But plenty of meetings.

    Pros

HP still has a good brand and enough engineers to make some of the world's class-leading technology products. There is opportunity to work on projects here that only a few companies have the size and ability to work on, much less do right and ship. I don't think one would expect to make a long career out of being at HP, but several years could be a rewarding experience on the way to something more well run, smaller and more aggressive.

    Cons

HP was once a company where a young engineer could go and spend a lifetime designing, testing and building some of the worlds highest quality technology products. The products were conservative but known for their steady reliability and overall quality.

Today HP is a large company that lacks a charismatic leader and a strong, clear vision that the company as a whole can follow. As a result, some areas suffer greatly while others are fun, productive places to work. Physical surroundings and lifestyle are better at younger companies with contemporary furnishings. Processes at HP are often company-wide leading to impersonal and frustrating activities. Meetings are accepted too much.

    Advice to Management

Top management is aggressively making the changes necessary to fix this company. It's a huge challenge, but led by Meg Whitman, things are on the right track. However, in order for employees to demonstrate their potential, they need to believe in what HP is, what it stands for and where it is going. Then, they need to aggressively go after an execution path that will re-establish HP as a world leader in engineering-focused, class-leading technology products.
