I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 5 years)

One of the better group of people I have worked with, everyone gets along and works together well. Contracts are stable and HP has a knack for keeping them while winning new ones. Work/Life balance is awesome, I never have a problem working from home, going to appointments, or being able to leave early to match my children's schedules. There are no set work hours, other than you fulfill your 8 hours a day minimum. With that, there's also no set time to come in or go home, meaning you can come in Monday at 7AM and Tuesday at 9AM, whatever works for you.

Management is not very "people friendly". My current Ops Manger is a former 20 year Marine and runs our shop like it's the Marine Corps. Most of the management doesn't know it's employees or seem to want to get to know anyone other than those working for them. They spend a lot of time in their offices. I have worked in the same building for 5 years and never met anyone in the upper Upper Management. Pay is average/below average and don't expect to get more than a 2% raise at any given time. Last year, the part of HP I work for was the highest money maker for HP overall and they froze all salary increases for employees. They did, however, send out a thank you email for making the company so much money. Bonuses are meager, but they do give stocks as a bonus to even it out. The stocks are vested over 3 years and if you leave the company you lose any unvested stocks. The elevators are so bad here, I always take the stairs. We have 5 elevators for 6 floors and it takes longer than 30 seconds for an elevator to arrive minimum, regardless of what time or day or how many people are actually in the building. IRA matches are lower than most companies in the DC area, tops at 4% matching. Don't expect to get sent to any training or any classes or boot camps to help you achieve certifications, but expect gaining certifications to be part of your yearly review.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the military mentality. Yes, I served 9 years in the military, too, but now I'm a civilian and having done my time, I expect to be treated like a civilian. Get to know your people, so we don't feel like we're working for an anonymous suit. Pay your people when they make you money, thank you emails while freezing salaries angers a lot of people and kills morale. Improve the morale of your workers, especially when they do a great job, and it'll be more beneficial to everyone.

    Positive Outlook
