    Pros

    For a large company, a little better than average.

    Cons

    Two classes of employees: those in a line of business and those [second class citizens] in the "Horizontals" (HR, IT, Finance, Legal). Different compensation systems. Horizontals are entirely focused on cost reduction to conform to industry metrics, with the predictable result that processes are simply moved from horizontal to vertical. The horizontal function then looks good; upper mgmt thinks they are reducing costs but really the costs are just being moved around. Also re cost reduction, whole processes are moved to low cost locations - euphemistically (and insultingly!) called "centers of excellence". Costs DO go down, but the processes become frozen in time, being performed in exactly the same way as when they were taken over. Employees in Bangalore, Cyberjaya, etc. are not trained (nor paid sufficiently) to be qualified to modify the process as needed.

    Advice to Management

    Rethink the (Mark Hurd era) carve out of the horizontal functions. They should be aligned with the businesses they support.
