    I worked at Highlights for Children full-time (more than 3 years)


    For those who need work/life balance, this is acheivable in most areas of the company. If you are a highly creative, acheivement-oriented person, you are not likely to be happy at Highlights. But, there are comfortable jobs available for people who can adapt to the slow pace and politics.

    The core of the business is driven by direct sales. While that is a marketing method that is eroding, it is doing so slowly enough that, sometimes despite itself, the company is likely to stay fiscally stable for some time. This means that, while the company absolutely has a culture that discourages innovation, the conservative nature is actually quite well matched with the business environment. You'll hardly be exposed to cutting edge thinking or surrounded by creative talent, but there is real stability in most positions.


    For a children's publisher, Highlights is a weirdly hyper-political environment. Primarily, the politics are controlled by leadership's personal impressions of people, not performance to goals. Perhaps this is an element of being family-owned; perhaps it is just a culture that has developed. Many talented people have been pushed out because their styles clashed with editorial; some mediocre people been elevated because they present no threat and tend to agree with leadership.

    If you want to, here is my guide for how to succeed to Highlights: (1) Figure out the power landscape. It is not always strictly associated with titles. There are some VPs who have very little actual power; there are editors whose opinion of you can get you pushed out easily. (2) Once you have a handle on the power landscape, start to agree with the most powerful person in the room, at least 90% of the time. (3) Do less. You are more likely to make a name for yourself poking holes in other people's ideas than in coming up with your own.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be brave enough to realize that really great employees will challenge some of the status quo. You can disagree -- and even discount many of their ideas -- without needing to asassinate their character and push them out.

    Consider that a healthy workplace needs a mix of personality types -- and the company would use some dreamers, some risk-takers, and some "disruptors." There is still core magic in the ideas that started the company, but they flourished in a time when more risk and creativity was embraced. How amazing would it be to see some of that return?

    The CEO seemed to really get it, but why does it never feel like his vision is affecting the company strongly?
