    I worked at Holiday Stationstores

    Pros

Benefits were good, my manager was good about giving me a fair/consistent schedule. Free coffee/fountain soda while punched in was a great perk. We did get some fuel discounts, and it was super easy for employees to sign up for the monthly car wash program with payroll deduction. If you are looking to open your own gas station location (either corporate or franchise), you can move from Assistant Store Manager to managing your own store within even the first year.

    Cons

Very high turnover for staff members. We often got very crabby customers who at times were not only rude but downright threatened our staff. I quickly learned that the corporate attitude toward asking a disrespectful customer was (and I paraphrase), "Bend over backward for the customer. Since it costs more money for us to acquire a new customer base, we would rather just fire you after a complaint. If it ever comes down to you versus keeping a customer, you can count on us keeping that customer." It's very stressful to get routinely chewed out by unhappy customers while feeling like your company won't even support you. The hours weren't the best (I worked 2pm-10pm weeknights and mostly 5am-2pm weekends). I also tried several times to move into Corporate but was repeatedly turned down--they have very strict channels for advancement. If you aren't willing to manage your own gas station, you can forget about career advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let your employees know that it's NOT okay to be verbally abused or threatened by customers and that you would support a corporate policy of asking those people to kindly leave the store. Yes, "The customer may not always be right . . . but they will always be the customer" is true--but employees need to feel like they matter as people, too. Also, keep an eye out for stellar employees at the store level and HIRE FROM WITHIN. Some of the StationStore employees would be AWESOME to advance to the Corporate office. But not everybody wants to run their own gas station . . . consider re-thinking some of the current steps people are required to take to move up in the business.
