    I have been working at Holland & Barrett Retail part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    I have great colleagues and we work well as a team. My manager and supervisor are saints, I don't know how they cope.

    Interacting with customers, especially our regulars, is nice. You get the occasional bad sport, but on the whole our customer base is very nice.

    The feeling of helping people find what they are looking for is nice, especially when customers come back and tell you how well a product worked.

    Qualifications. The company expects you to complete compulsory qualifications on supplements and vitamins, which are relatively easy but take up a large amount of your free time. They go up to the equivalent of an A-Level, which is always handy to have.

    The company also expects you to train for the job above your current position which is useful for your own personal experience and also for the store team as a whole. This is due to low staff numbers per store meaning cover is a constant battle when people are sick or take holiday and training for the role above your own means more chance of overtime.

    Cons

    There is too much responsibility and learning expected for the levels of pay offered, despite the slight pay increases for each qualification gained. Almost all of the workbook and revision has to be done in your own time as the hours allotted to run the store are awful. There is barely enough time to get the essential work done, let alone study for compulsory tests. Weekly training updates are compulsory as well and while this is a good idea in theory, finding the time to complete these (including a full role-play for each member of staff to recap what we have learnt) is near impossible.

    We have to ask too many unnecessary questions to at the close of each sale, which sometimes gets us verbal abuse from customers who don't want their time wasted. This also makes us very aware that there are customers being held up in the queue while we reel off a load of questions over and over. However, were we not to ask them we would be in trouble and receive a bad score if the customer happened to be a mystery shopper.

    In this day and age the open door policy is ridiculous. It's not only bad for the environment with constant heating/air con just drifting out the door but also damages our health - I could barely count change at the till during last winter as my fingers were going numb. Almost all customers commented on how cold we must have been, to the point where we resorted to handing out multiple feedback cards in the hope that someone would write to head office and complain on our behalf, as it seems out voices fall on deaf ears.

    Our store is run down and dangerous to staff, customers and the flats above. We have dry rot and damp in the staff areas, as well as extremely poor fire safety such as a lack of fire doors in essential locations.

    Lone working is a real problem. For two and a half hours, or more, at the end of each day my manager must lone work, which means either no toilet break or closing the store briefly. It also means they have no way to get stock for customers if needed, as the shop floor must never be left unattended. There is also a risk to their safety, especially in the winter months when it gets dark and no many people are around outside. I would not feel comfortable working alone, especially since we have no security cameras in our store or the surrounding street.

    Finally, while the 25% discount is generous it only really brings most products down to the price they usually are at competitors stores.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take a month or so of your time to work full time as a manager in one of your lower earning stores. Not a shiny new concept store, but a store that is just getting by and in need of some TLC. Maybe then you will understand the levels of stress your employees are under, the high staff turnover you undoubtedly have and the reasons for your rating on websites such as this being so low. Your staff are human beings who are trying their best with what little they are given. Your company would not exist without us and you'd do best to remember it. We do not feel valued and if you can't even keep your staff on your side, what hope do you have with your customer base?

    Look after your stores, especially where fire risks have been reported repeatedly. A low foot fall in your store is no excuse for not having up to date fire measures and there is only so much a manager can do before it is beyond their control.

    You are losing customers to other retailers online due to your prices and the fact that many of your stores do not look appealing due to wear and tear. I can't help wondering how some stores can be in such a bad state, and wages can be so low, when you charge so much for your products.

    Get rid of lone working. It is not safe for you staff and we are aware of this.

    Scrap the open door policy. Plenty of other stores have adapted their doors to be light weight and easy to open, thus saving money on heating/air conditioning bills as well as being more environmentally friendly. Many stores even state this fact on informative stickers placed on their doors. You are behind the times and the customers comment on it.

    Also, invest in some spell-checking software, or a proof-reader, for whoever types up the promotional and reference materials. Some of it is pitiful.
