I have been working at Holmes Murphy

    Pros

HMA has a very relaxed atmosphere with friendly people, a good environment, a reasonable workload, and a generous bonus program.

The company throws jovial meetings and parties quite often and knows how to loosen up and relax.

Because it's a smaller company, there is a lot less bureaucracy involved in making things happen -- this can be very nice that things happen quickly. It's nice to watch changes in your favor happen quickly in a way that just couldn't happen at the larger Des Moines-based insurance agencies / companies.

The benefits and pay are okay, but are just "above average".

It is very difficult to be terminated from HMA if you are performing at a good level. The company doesn't like to fire people or lay people off.

The company does a very good job of keeping fresh blood in upper management, with a strong perpetuation plan in place.

    Cons

Because of how long tenured many folks are with the company, an attitude of "this is the way we have always done it" lingers around every strategic move. Sometimes it feels like trying to turn the Titanic when changes need to happen.

The company has a history of "always saying yes" -- this can lead to trouble.

For many folks, there is minimal room for advancement, and those who are advanced often seem to have been favorites anyway.

Because the company is so sales-driven, there is a very dim view held in upper management for anyone who isn't directly involved in sales. Those in corporate services (IT, Accounting, Professional Development, etc.) are never recognized at meetings or in company communications. This is fine if you're in sales or are servicing accounts, but otherwise, be prepared to be invisible and viewed as a drain on resources they wish would go away.

Compared to some of the more sprawling corporate campuses in Des Moines, the amenities are fewer. There is no on-site cafeteria or workout center, and the offered health club reimbursement is likely only sufficient to pay for a few months at an off-site club. The company's smaller size has benefits (see the Pros section), but this is one of the major drawbacks.

There are some employees who have been around too long and have reached a point where they're nearly impossible to terminate for PR reasons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, this is a really good company to work for and most folks will really enjoy it. Continuing to stay focused on HMA's legacy as a service driven company is a great approach, but it needs to be extended to those in Corporate Services as well.

Try to infuse the company with fresh blood and make sure folks feel welcome to work their entire careers at HMA -- provided their performance stays up to it.

The company should leverage its smaller size to its advantage by being more nimble and quick to embrace new and different ways of doing business. The large behemoths have trouble adapting to change quickly -- this is where HMA could (and should) have a strategic advantage and should exploit it.
