They don't require significant experience to start and they offer on-the-job training. With a year or two of experience, you can get a job at a better company.
The company was purchased by Endurance International Group in 2012 and the work environment took a turn for the worse. I started as a Level 1 Admin, so I wasn't required to take phone calls or chats, but the work was very much a callcenter-type environment. There is constant pressure to maintain a high ticket count and quality of responses is of secondary concern. If you're interested in helping customers with non-trivial issues, you'll find this tedious.
Advice to Management
I've learned not to offer advice to those who don't want it. While Hostgator was an independent company, those in charge were responsive to their customers and employees, but the overlords of EIG are insulated from the unhappiness of their customers.
