I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work-life balance for higher education practice was very good. I experienced few late nights and typical work hours were 8:30 - 6:00. Healthcare benefits, 401k match, stock purchase program, and performance bonuses were all good perks. Managing Directors were all bright and dedicated to developing junior talent. Strong "Friday Office" culture for some groups.

    Cons

The higher education practice mimics the industry it serves. Consultants (Analysts, Associates, Managers) are tied to 1-2 Managing Directors that specialize in a specific service (performance improvement, research administration, tech implementation, etc.). Project staffing becomes very dependent on "your MD" having a good year. This system forces even junior consultants to specialize early on in their careers. This can be good or bad, but can definitely limit "exit options" after Huron. The role of Managers in the Higher Ed group is more of a senior consultant/specialist rather than a traditional project manager (unlike the Healthcare practice).
