I have been working at IB Times full-time (Less than a year)
I chose to work at IBTimes because the editors I interviewed with seemed passionate about building an ambitious newsroom that combined breaking news with deeply reported features. I didn't assume that they had everything figured out from day one because it was clear to me that they were in growth mode, and had their sights set high (also, no media outlet has it all figured out, I've also learned while in previous positions). I was and still am excited to be part of that. It's definitely not for everybody. But my experience at IBTimes has so far held up to that original impression -- the editors here are willing to invest in talent and pursuing great stories in a way that I've not seen at many traditional outlets. It's refreshing to be part of a place that is growing rather than constricting. There is freedom to write about topics of my choosing within my beat and I have definitely been able to report stories more broadly and fully than colleagues at other outlets. I think that's the direction the publication is heading, and I think it's a smart one.
It's definitely a fast-paced newsroom, not for the faint of heart. It takes awhile to understand the vision and aspirations of the editors and may seem bit chaotic in the interim. The place is growing so fast that it's sometimes hard to form a strong sense of community and see any shared vision on a day to day basis, so you have to trust in the process and the editors who are working hard to lift the profile of the publication.
Advice to Management
Continue to hire smart reporters with ambitious ideas and invest in the stories that other outlets have abandoned. Talk directly with your newsroom staff more to help everyone arrive on the same page and see their role in the broader mission.
