I have been working at IHA

    Pros

Travel, very often to exotic locales. Fascinating work programme across thematic areas which span some of the most pivotal global issues. Ample working and networking opportunities with senior executives from government, business, academia, civil society and media who engage the organisation through corporate membership or as stakeholders.

    Cons

'Groundhog day' tactical management culture. Secrecy and lack of trust of officers. Centralised, closed 'Encyclopaedia Britanica' vs. network, open 'Wikipedia' mentality. Conservativism - missing significant opportunities by not being proactive, 'first mover'. Lack of whole of office coordination - right hand oten doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Knowledge management issues. Personalised politics - lack of professionalism and strategic thinking. Little opportunity for structured professional development or career advancement within the organisation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to basics - get strategic - develop organisational mission to be completed by values, goals and actions. Lead rather than 'manage'. Rationalise membership - harness the significant, untapped non-financial resources of members. Formalise partnerships with key stakeholders. Trust the skills/experience of officers and provide them with a more structured office administration, and structured professional development and career advancement opportunities. Hire more admin staff and outsource or drop non-core work.
