I have been working at Imperial College London full-time (More than 5 years)

A top-ranked institution - makes it easier to attract good PhD students and postdocs, as well as to obtain external funding. Gets visited regularly by world leading scientists as guest speakers.

Not a friendly environment for people of average or below-average talent or ambition. London is a very expensive places to live - and salary levels do not fully compensate for that, making you poorer than in the same kind of job at universities outside London (including Oxford and Cambridge).

    Advice to Management

With the growth of real estate prices in London outpacing the growth of salaries at Imperial, the management will have to start seriously considering providing faculty housing at affordable prices, or it will lose some of the existing faculty and fail to recruit some future top people by not providing it.
