Former Employee - Classroom Teacher in Indianapolis, IN

I worked at Indianapolis Public Schools full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the most dedicated teachers you will ever find.
You can definitely make a difference for many students.
If you can be a good teacher here, you will be a successful teacher anywhere.

    Cons

    Poor compensation and benefits.
    Lack of resources.
    Unprofessional administrators.
    Impossible demands on your time.
Most of your time will not be spent in teaching but in satisfying useless paperwork for administration.
Administrators who undermining teaching and classroom management.
Negative and corrosive atmosphere due to administration.
Professional development that is anything but professional or useful.
Many administrators micro-manage and impede education.
One of the most pretentious and unprofessional organizations I have ever experienced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting failed teachers to administrative positions.
Stop promoting non teachers to administration.
    End cronyism.
Recognize teachers and ALL staff members who do good work and work for students. A simple "thank you" works well.
Be consistent and rational in your decision making.
    Follow legal contracts.
    Follow educational laws.
Stop allowing administrators to threaten and punish teachers who do not work excessive, extra hours on campus.
    Treat staff as professionals.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
