I have been working at Inflection full-time (more than an year)

Inflection has done a remarkable job of hiring a group of extremely intelligent, hard-working, social, and diverse people, who also somehow are extremely modest and collaborative. It's a tall order for sure. Hands down, the quality of the people are the strength of the company and are what keep it moving forward and upward, frankly setting it apart from other companies I've worked for.

Inflection does a great job of distributing responsibility, recognizing group and individual achievements, and celebrating failures when done in the pursuit of success. It's a very data-driven environment, so you have to get comfortable digging in to the numbers, but most well-run companies these days share this trait. Recently, there's also been more of a focus put on management training as well as career planning and growth, which is definitely part of the company's maturation process.

The culture at Inflection continues to grow and evolve, but is always focused on promoting a well-rounded, healthy, and happy community. I know of no other company with a "Happiness Engineer" as an actual position, but Inflection's got it. From happy hours, movie nights, lunchtime speakers, fitness activities, sailing trips, yoga classes, massages, birthday celebrations, and annual parties/trips, the company definitely manages to maintain the fun "startup" vibe, despite its 7 years of age.

No company is perfect, and if anyone tells you theirs is, they're not being genuine. However, Inflection does do a great job of recognizing when there are shortfalls in the employee experience and takes measurable steps to address those issues. For instance, at one point there was a lot of grumbling about the lack of seasoned middle managers and underwhelming career guidance and planning. In response, the company hired an in-house staff to build-out manager training, revamp the performance management process, and make career growth a real priority at Inflection. Is it 100% perfect? Not quite, but we're on the way.

Similarly, some employees felt that the company's vision was not being clearly communicated throughout the organization. In response, Matthew and Brian put together a whole afternoon to discuss the vision for our individual product lines, how they fit together, and how the overall Inflection company was poised to evolve and move forward. In addition, they added regular "half-time" meetings to take a step back and discuss longer-term trends in the business.

As with any company, there are always going to be interpersonal squabbles and times where personalities just clash. This scenario isn't common at Inflection, but it does lead to some people self-selecting out of Inflection (or being asked to leave) because they don't fit in with the performance expectations or company culture. I see this attrition, frankly, as natural.

In other cases, employees have left because it was "just time to try something new." In many of these cases, when I've spoken to the folks who've left, they always tell me how much they miss Inflection and never quite realized how good they had it until they left. Whenever I hear those perspectives, it always helps me refocus on all the great things the company has to offer, rather than dwell on the reasonably insignificant issues like compensation (which is not tops in the industry, but definitely above average).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep maintaining transparency and consistency in your messages and actions. Keep taking a pulse of the company and bubbling up issues as they arise and dealing with them quickly so they don't become the foundation for discontent. Most of all, keep approving wildly extravagant company trips to Vegas :)
