    Pros

Everything stated in this review relates to the greater development department including software development, quality development, documentation, and project management.

Employees are highly valued - Due to a particularly challenging technical screening it is difficult for InterSystems to hire new talent. Consequently, once your in, managers will bend over backwards to ensure that you stay.

Considerable mobility - Managers are quite willing to provide the resources for career advancement to those who ask. Although advancement may take much longer than in some other companies this is primarily due to the huge amount of knowledge and experience necessary to successfully perform in the more senior roles.

Extremely stable - The company has never had a layoff and it is extraordinarily rare for anyone to be fired (I've only heard of one instance).

High degree of freedom - Managers are very laissez faire and mostly act as a resource to workers. It is assumed that you are competent, responsible, and working in the best interest of the company. No one is going to count your hours or monitor your output.

Flat corporate structure - Most of the leadership structure is informal. Those who lead projects do so because they had the ability and initiative. What formal structure exists seems mostly administrative.

Talented coworkers - A side effect of the flat corporate structure and rigorous technical screening is that many employees held significantly more impressive titles in their previous positions. I think an unforeseen and positive consequence is that the staff is humble as well as extremely talented. And it should be noted that it is not the case that InterSystems happens to acquire employees during a downshift in their careers. Those who choose to leave InterSystems for other companies tend to regain their splendorous titles.

Generous vacation time - the PTO is near European levels.

    Cons

Slow moving - InterSystems has been a successful company for over 35 years now. The management is quite set in its ways and its difficult to get traction on any attempt to change things.

Lower than average pay - Compensation is approximately 25% lower than average for Cambridge. This is, however, still quite high.

Poor training - New technical hires have almost exclusively gone into support, which has a well developed training program. There is currently no training program for technical hires outside of the support department.

Proprietary technology - Development is done in a proprietary language based on MUMPS. Consequently, there are few career options outside of the company.

Disorganized - As well as a minimalist corporate structure there is little in the way of formal organizational processes. Collaboration is extremely difficult and goals are vaguely defined. There is a dizzying array of isolated tools and communication channels. Preference for each changes with the project, person, and season.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a training program for new technical hires outside of support.

Simplify and integrate the the various collaboration tools, eliminate the redundant ones.
