From opportunity to stability to decline

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in San Francisco, CA

I worked at International Data Group full-time (more than 10 years)

I stayed with IDG for as long as I did for several reasons.

The first is that this company gave me a chance to enter the specialty I'm in even though I had no formal training for this career or direct experience with it at the time. So I will always be grateful for that opportunity, and the confidence IDG people had in me.

The second is that the company had decent flexibility and policies, for the most part, such as a partial telecommute option.

The third is that the people I worked most closely with, the colleagues in my department within a department, were unfailingly smart, conscientious, and a pleasure to work with. And we had lots of work to do, of course--it was nice to be wanted and needed.

I believe I stayed in my IDG job too long due to complacency (and more than a little fear about re-entering the job market).

I stayed too long despite all the signs over the more recent years that our business unit was losing its audience and struggling to reposition itself. A number of changes at the top, the accompanying (and frequently frustrating) changes in policies, and rounds of layoffs should have prompted me to jump ship years ago.

Our office environment and culture changed dramatically in recent years, too, and in my opinion worsened as people seemed to form cliques.

To be honest, I can't see how those remaining at my business unit can thrive with all the work they have to do, but I wish them the best of luck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company certainly changed after Mr. McGovern's passing. I'm not sure what current management is striving to do now. I can only speak in regard to my former business unit, of course, when I say that it would be a shame if management failed to revitalize IDG's once well-regarded brands.
